“Kundalini Yoga is the science to unite the finite with Infinity, and it’s the art to experience Infinity in the finite.”

Yogi Bahjan

Kundalini yoga was brought into the mainstream in 1968 when Yogi Bhajan began teaching in California. He founded 3HO (the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization) in 1969 to introduce Kundalini yoga to a broader population.

The most complete type of yoga, Kundalini Yoga, brings balance to mind, body and soul by combining dynamic movements (kriyas), meditation, conscious breathing (pranayama), and the chanting of mantras. Through breath, specific movements, and timing, Kundalini works the nervous system on a cellular level and increase one’s energetic awareness.

WHAT IS KUNDALINI?

Kundalini is known as the yoga of awareness and translates to the “coiled one,” referring to the energy represented by a coiled snake at the base one’s spine. The practice of Kundalini Yoga is supposed to arouse the sleeping Kundalini Shakti (power) from its coiled base through the seventh chakra. Its ultimate goal is to build physical vitality and increase consciousness.

The asana sequences of Kundalini Yoga are called kriyas. Each kriya acts as a preset series of poses using specific breathing techniques and bandhas engagement designed to intensify the pose. Each kriya performed is associated with a specific chakra and can consist of quick, repetitive movements combined with designated breathing patterns or reciting mantras. With different kriyas, a pose might be held several minutes.

A typical Kundalini class begins with a short chant followed by a warm-up to stretch the spine and improve flexibility. Still, the main work of the class is the kriyas. The session ends with a meditation, which may be accompanied by the teacher playing a large gong, and a closing song.

HOW CAN KUNDALINI YOGA HELP WITH OUR HECTIC LIFE?

Kundalini yoga is the householders, business persons, and entrepreneurs yoga practice. The benefits are immediate and cumulative because Yogi Bhajan was conscious to the fact that life moves fast and we all need something quick to provide peace of mind. Every Kundalini class is cultivated toward a specific goal, such as boosting energy, thyroid activation, hormone imbalance, shifting metabolism, reducing stress, anxiety, and increasing one’s mental resilience. It is a yoga for householders, for people who must cope with the daily challenges and stresses of holding jobs, raising families, and managing businesses. It is a path for everyone who wants to increase their resilience to cope successfully with the mundane challenges of our rushed times.

Today, many people use Kundalini as a tool to achieve a life full of lightness, joy, and love. One of the most intense and spiritual types of yoga, Kundalini offers the opportunity to gain self-confidence, decrease anxiety, remove energy blockages, boost one’s focus, and invigorate the mind and spirit.
